blush on wheels

so, as i'm sure you are all aware, the july art crawl will be this friday. in addition to the usual fun, there will also be a blush shop pop-up trailer, with pieces selected by the fabulous beaux mondes girls. i was looking at the preview on their site here just today, and everything just looks delicious.

can't wait and see you there!

old is the new new, part 2

anyone who was in hamilton this weekend will remember the thunder and lightening of yesterday morning. honestly, claire (you met her in part 1) and i didn't really want to haul ourselves out of bed and all the way up the mountain to talize, but somehow we did, and i sure am glad, because it was one of our most successful thrifting outings ever (of which there have been many).

(please excuse the crappy quality of some of the photos, i didn't feel much like lugging my nikon along for the trip so cell phone pictures will have to do...)

i don't even want to tell you how long it took to try all of this on.

if you were to look in my closet, you'd find clothes in two sizes: xs or xl (or xxxl). wearing oversized shirts as dresses is a practice i employ every time i can get away with it, especially in summer. this men's waffle shirt was $6.99 and the belt cinching it was $2. i loved how thick the heel was on these boots, and they were only $7.99. awesome.

a sampling of the "new" shoes now in my closet.

another item taking up a good chunk of my closet is the little black dress. this one sets itself apart with some seriously cool sleeves. it was $7.99 and the clutch was only $1!

i absolutely love wearing red with neutral tans or beiges. these shorts were $4.99, the tank (100% silk) and the purse were both $2.99. these shoes were possibly my favourite purchase of the day, ringing in at $7.99.

keeping outfit posts coming in the summer is harder than i imagined it would be. most likely because spending any significant amount of time on campus just seems wrong this time of year. fingers crossed for more diligence in june than in may.

thanks so much to claire for being my photographer for the day!

birds of a feather

remember elle (previously seen here)? well, she just so happens to be an intern at a local vintage and consignment store, peacock chic boutique, and she mentioned that i should stop by sometime. having finally gotten the majority of my heavy school assignments out of the way, i swung by today and met the two lovely co-owners (and sisters), marija and afrodita durlov. they were gracious enough to let me take pictures of the store (and even some merchandise) to share with you...

a gorgeous two-piece ensemble from the sixties. i literally saw it and said, "that's grace kelly."

one of my favourites... a long-sleeved wool and fringe mini dress.

a mustard yellow cocktail dress. i have decided i need this.

a collection of cameo pins.

elle in a riding cape and attaché case.

a swirly floor-length butterfly skirt.

before leaving, i got a chance to talk to the durlov sisters about their philosophy on vintage clothing... "we aim to give people unique clothing options at any budget. we carry items from $2 to $300. we believe in recycling, in a new take on vintage... mixing vintage with modern. really, you don't want to look like you stepped out of a time machine and you don't want to be a spokesperson for any one look. we really believe in personal style over complete style."

although i didn't have much time for shopping today, there are definitely a couple pieces i can't wait to go back and claim. everyone was so nice, and the shop was impeccable and très mignon. my experience today was wonderful... thanks so much marija and afrodita!

old is the new new, part 1

since mac à la mode started, it's become much more obvious to me how many others on campus have a zest for vintage and thrifted clothing. it can be a little daunting at times, and i'm not going to lie, it usually takes a bit of dedication to find those worthwhile items. but worthwhile they are indeed, and at these prices, what student could resist?!

so this weekend, my friend claire (a third year communications student) and i set out for one of our favourite hamilton thrifting haunts, talize. we both did very well, coming home with massive orange bags full of new-to-us clothing, including some thrifting basics i wanted to share with you...

the slip: vintage silk slips always have the most intricate detailing and can double as a flirty slip dress when you're feeling a little daring. this one was $4.99 and 100% silk. worn with a vest from zara.

the scarf: another item i can never pass up is a colourful silk scarf. i love wearing them in my hair to spruce up an otherwise bland ensemble. this one was $1.99 and again 100% silk. claire's linen shirt was also a new purchase, coming in at $5.99 from the men's section.

the rings: talize has quite of bit of jewelry as well, but they're all hermetically sealed away in little ziploc bags, and rifling through them can be a real test of patience. having said that however, we got both these rings in one little bag for $1.99.

good luck out there!
